Orofacial pain conditions can result from a disturbance or disruption of the central, peripheral nervous system. Some of these conditions refer pain to the dental structures and can confuse both the patient and the provider of care. Sometimes these results in unnecessary treatment performed in good faith to attempt to address the patients’ complaint. It is important to identify the source of the problem, which may differ from the site at which the pain is reported by the patient.
